Before visiting the LBJ library, I didn't realize how many wonderful President Johnson accomplished during his time in the White House. It is so easy for all the great work of a President could be forgotten, because of scandals, wars, and bad press.
Unfortunately, for President Johnson this was the Vietnam War. The war is probably the first thing that comes to mind when people think about LBJ. The war also played a huge in him deciding not run for a second term. However, with all of the negatives that are associated with President Johnson there are so many positives that also are associated with his legacy. His leadership vision was amazing and the fact that he was able to accomplish most of his goals is remarkable.
LBJ's leadership vision including many different areas. His plans were very diverse and was of his main focus was to give people a chance to succeed. Some of his goals included enriching and elevating our national life, advancing the quality of our American civilization, ending poverty and racial injustice, feeding the desire for beauty and hunger for community, renewing contact with
nature, making our cities great, preventing poverty from undermining learning, giving every citizen full equality, and so much more. LBJ passed several bills that he planned before he got into office. One of his most famous passed that was passed, was the civil rights act of 1957. LBJ had a huge focus on poverty. His first job after college was as a teacher in a small town where he there was a huge Hispanic population. He had the opportunity to see first hand how poverty affects children in school and every aspect of their lives. LBJ did a great job of turning his goals into a reality. From 1963 to 1968 he fought to improve the environment, protect the land, and improve the quality of life. He also passed a new bill allowing immigrants from anywhere in the world to come to the US based on their skill and family ties in the US. He also started Project head start which is "a program of the United States Department of Health and Human Services that provides comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families." President Johnson was a man for the people. He was known as skillful and influential political leader.
When writing P4, it was a great time to reflect and truly think about what I want to do in the future. Like President Johnson, one of my goals is to help underprivileged children in any way I can. "I have always seen the need for positive role models in black and brown communities, specifically lower income families. Growing up I lived in predominately white neighborhoods, went to private school, and most of my friends were white. However, on Sunday’s my family and I would attend church on the other side of town. This was a predominately black church which was located in a low income neighborhood."(P4) When you see a problem, I feel like if you are in
a position to help you should. President Johnson saw a need in underprivileged communities and did something to help fix it. I admire him for everything he accomplished and making his goals come into fruition. "Until justice is blind to color, until education is unaware of race, until opportunity is unconcerned with the color of men's skins, emancipation will be a proclamation but not a fact." (LBJ)
